About PayPal Fees

Standard (Goods & Services): The default fee for most online sales in the US — 3.49% of the transaction plus a flat $0.49. This applies when buyers use the "Goods & Services" option, giving them purchase protection.

International / Cross-border: When your buyer is outside your home country, PayPal adds an additional cross-border fee, typically bringing the total to 4.99% + $0.49. Exchange rate margins may also apply.

QR Code (In-person): PayPal's discounted rate for face-to-face transactions using QR codes — just 1.90% + $0.10, making it competitive with traditional POS terminals.

Micropayments: For transactions under $10, PayPal offers an optional micropayment rate of 5.00% + $0.05. This can be more economical than the standard fee for very small amounts; your account must be enabled for it.

Fees shown are estimates based on publicly published PayPal rates and may vary by account type, country, or promotional pricing. Always confirm current rates in your PayPal account settings.

PayPal's Fee Structure Is More Complicated Than One Flat Rate

PayPal doesn't charge a single universal fee — the rate depends on whether you're receiving a domestic or international payment, whether the buyer used a goods-and-services transaction, a PayPal QR code in person, or a micropayments-eligible small amount, and which country both parties are in. Domestic commercial transactions, cross-border payments, and micropayments (common for low-priced digital goods) can each carry a meaningfully different percentage-plus-fixed-fee structure. Without a calculator, it's genuinely difficult to know in advance what will actually land in your account versus what the buyer paid.

Working Backward: Pricing to Hit a Target Net Amount

Beyond simply calculating fees on a known amount, freelancers and small sellers often need to work the problem backward: "I need to receive exactly $500 after fees — what should I invoice the client for?" Because PayPal's fee is itself a percentage of the gross charge, naively adding the fee percentage to your target amount under-collects. This calculator supports solving in both directions — fees-on-a-given-amount, and gross-amount-needed-for-a-target-net — so you can quote or invoice correctly the first time instead of chasing a shortfall after the fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the PayPal fee different for every transaction type?⌄
PayPal prices domestic commercial payments, cross-border/international payments, QR code in-person payments, and micropayments differently, each with its own percentage-plus-fixed-fee structure. Select the matching transaction type in the calculator to get an accurate figure.
How do I figure out what to charge a client to net a specific amount?⌄
Use the reverse-calculation mode: enter your target net amount and the calculator works backward through PayPal's fee formula to show you the gross amount to invoice, accounting for the fact that the fee itself is a percentage of that gross amount.
Are currency conversion fees included?⌄
This calculator focuses on PayPal's transaction fee. If the payment involves a currency conversion, PayPal typically applies an additional currency conversion markup on top, which is separate from the fee shown here — check our Currency Converter for reference exchange rates.
Is this tool affiliated with PayPal?⌄
No. This is an independent calculator based on PayPal's publicly published fee schedules, provided for estimation purposes. Always confirm exact fees in your PayPal account for your specific country and account type.
